Our Vegetable Garden

Before we go inside, there are some pretty, pretty flowers growing right outside the gate.  They are extra special because we collected the seeds from  a friend’s garden last fall.

IMG_20180628_1800372_rewindAnd now, welcome to the jungle. I promise myself every year it’s not going to look like this. I know, I know never make a promise you can’t keep. I say I’m going to prune my tomato vines, and I try. I guess I just don’t know how, but but they are delicious  anyway, so I will just give thanks and fill my tummy.IMG_20180628_1801235_rewind I am really looking forward to some spaghetti squash. There are plenty growing in various sizes. I sure hope they beat the squash bugs. Pesky little critters!IMG_20180628_1801463_rewindSo far these jalapenos have been just right. A little heat but not too hot.


We have already eaten quite a bit of broccoli, and this one is ready anytime now.


I have only picked a few peas to have in salads so far, but these are growing in the shade. So hopefully there is still time.


The corn patch is looking strong and healthy. I can almost taste the fresh corn.IMG_20180628_1803530_rewindThere are lots of goodies growing in tires. I wonder who had to buy new tires last month.


The tomatoes on the deck are doing quite well too.

Talkative Tuesday


I think little Nemo has the right idea on this cool, rainy day.

I’m kind of lost with no yard or garden work to be done. But there is always something to be found that needs doing.

I dropped my oldest off at her temporary job, did a little shopping, and am now home and have a whole chicken cooking in the smoker. Yum!

I am happy to be getting the rain which will hopefully give the garden a good boost. It is growing exceptionally well. We planted in a new spot this year, and boy am I happy to be picking all sorts of things. Yesterday’s breakfast was eggs fresh from the coop with tomatoes and jalapenos, lunch was a fresh picked cabbage sauteed with garden squash, zucchini, and garlic, and supper was a freshly picked salad of lettuce, kale, chard, spinach, green peppers, radishes, cucumbers, and tomatoes. I added some of our boiled eggs, venison steak, and shredded cheese. Double yum! I love days like that. So Much fun!

We are getting plenty of eggs from our chickies. We have a broody hen that is hopefully sitting on fertilized eggs. If they are the daddy chicken is our silky rooster. We are expecting some funky looking chicks.

I am still pretty much in love with my pyrenees pup who is now nearly two years old. He is a good guard dog, and gentle with our animals even if he does like to chase them and give hugs. We are expecting him to be a daddy in a few weeks and will get to keep one of his puppies if everything works out. We will pick a female and are hoping she will be a tad bit smaller than Andre. We have noticed that dogs that used to look large to us now don’t look so big anymore.

I have some tidying up to do, will pick up my daughter from work soon, and relax and enjoy the evening with my family.

This is the day that the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24



Christmas Is Upon Us

Christmas really is the best time of year. There’s nothing better than celebrating the birth of our Saviour.

Thanksgiving was great. Quentin worked until 3:30, so me and my kids had all day to prepare dinner. Anyone else work retail? You just learn to roll with it. 🙂

Quentin has harvested 7 deer already. We are enjoying the meat for sure. Our venison favorites have been corned venison and a new venison summer sausage recipe. I will be back to share more about what we do with all that meat!

There have been some really cold nights already, and we even woke to ice coming down yesterday morning. We used it as an excuse to skip church and curled up on the couch together to listen to A Christmas Carol audio book.

We got a Great Pyrenees puppy back in October. He’s not only the most beautiful dog I’ve ever seen, but he’s gentle and calm and makes our days a little brighter. Yep, I love that crazy puppy. 🙂

Our garden is still producing! I am picking lettuce, kale, and radishes. We are also starting to get eggs! I think about half of our chickens have started laying. We had to start all over mid May after a predator wiped out our entire flock. We currently have 6 Americaunas and 6 Buff Brahmas.

I am going to share some pictures from the last little bit but will be back more often to share with you some of our Christmas season.

Fall Days

It’s a beautiful day. I just love fall! Yesterday  I made a pot of chicken and dumplings. Today we are enjoying a pot of potato soup. Nothing says fall better than soups, stews, and dumplings.
