What’s Up? An Update with Pictures

We got another load of snow dumped on us last week, and there is a threat of freezing rain almost daily. They’re even calling for 5-8 inches of snow and ice tomorrow. I have gotten a little weary waiting on spring with all this coldness lately, but, not to worry, we have had some sunshiny days in the 4o’s also.

I haven’t really been making a meal plan lately. Just loading up on fruits, veggies, and staples at the grocery. We have been eating lots of soups, stews, and casseroles. I have been keeping my grocery budget right around $80 every week including non-food and animal feed.

We have two more months of school left and down to just two subjects. We plan on taking off May, June, and July. We are taking off this Friday for homeschool bowling and Monday because we will be out of town.

Today, I got all my seeds started. I started tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, and chives. I will keep them nice and warm inside until they start to sprout then put them out during the daylight hours until night time temps warm up. Everything else I will direct sow in the garden. I plan to plant my peas this Saturday but will probably be waiting on the snow to melt.

Get ready to garden. Spring is on its way.

:)Vicki

  1. Wow, all the food looks great especially the potato soup. Our weather is crazy, too. Right now it’s 71 degrees, but tomorrow night it is supposed to rain, sleet, & snow and get down to 16 degrees. We are surely having some wild weather. I’m ready to garden, too. 🙂

  2. Hi Vicki! You’ve been busy cooking and growing I see. Our snow was supposed to begin overnight but stayed rain. The real snow is coming today. The rain all day yesterday has been a problem with puddling on my yard. If it freezes today we might have an ice skating rink..lol. I just did rabbit duty. I am amazed at how much rabbit “berries” they make! I remember you saying how you use them for your gardens. I hear they are very rich and good for that! If anything, I have too much fertilizer just with 2 bunnies! Andrea

    • Hi, Andrea, so far the snow has missed us! We are just getting rain right now. I hope your yard doesn’t get too muddy. Yes, we only have one rabbit, and he gives us tons of berries for the garden. This is my first year using them in the garden. I am hoping to notice a huge difference in my plants. 🙂

  3. Your food looks delicious! I was thinking of your baked potato soup today. Good to have your seeds already started. Makes me want to get started too. I was hoping to plant peas Saturday too but I’m pretty certain it will be too wet here. I sure hope we get to go bowling tomorrow. God bless.

  4. Starting seeds is on our agenda for this week, too. It’s hard to believe that we’ll be starting our gardens in about 6 weeks. Everything looks delicious. Stay warm! Noticed your blogs name on Andrea’s blog and was intrigued by its name.

  5. Hi Vicki, How do you keep your little greenhouse from blowing over or away? What zone are you in? That chicken alfredo dish looks so good! I am copying it but will have to leave the broccoli and califlower out as hubby does not like them. How do you make the zucchini pizza bites? Did I miss the instructions somewhere? You make such interesting meals. Nancy

  6. Hey, Nancy! 🙂 I plan on sandwiching the greenhouse between two heavy benches and bungy cording it to them. I have it sitting indoors in a sunny spot right now, and if I had to guess, I would say it reached 100 degrees today. We are in garden zone 6-7. Madison made up the pizza bites because we have so many bags in the freezer. Just thaw them a little so you can get them apart, grease your pan, add your toppings to the zucchini, and heat them in the oven at 350. I think she broiled them a bit too. We also did some squash, and they were even better than the zucchini. Can’t wait to make some with fresh squash! Have a great weekend and don’t forget about time change! 🙂 Vicki
